Tighten to your spun strings

Tips on a simple trick for stick stables that can extend life on spun strings and at the same time give a little more treble even on old tired strings.

Before attaching the string with the stick, be sure to spin the string clockwise 2-3 turns and thus tighten to the spun wrap around the core of the string. The theory behind the trick is that the central core will be stretched out when tensioned and the spun strand around the core will be pulled out a bit like a spring. In the openThe wires that are formed collect dirt and you also lose the direct metal-to-metal contact between the loops in the spun strand. When it is spun the string also becomes a little stiffer and gives more treble. This is something that piano tuners do and it works even on guitar strings

Could be that the very low tension Newtone Heritage strings that I use on GammelGura most benefit from such a bias, since the core possibly stretches more than on standard strings. Watch out when new strings are put on, it works on old strings as well.

The easiest way is to test mount the string and tune it a little so that the string gets the right bend at the string pin, then loosen the string and spin the string with the bent string as a "handle". Then hold the string so that it does not spin or growl and mount the string pin in the usual way. Then tune up for real.
